When noise reduction is the goal, check the NRC value (Noise Reduction Coefficient) of the product. The NRC value ranges from 0.0 to 1.0 and reports the average sound absorbed by the product. An NRC value of 0.0 specifies that the product doesn’t reduce the sound, rather it reflects all the sound energy. On the contrary, a higher NRC value suggests that the product absorbs the sounds.
Metal ceilings come with an NRC value up to 0.9. With larger surface area and 20% perforations, these ceilings can prove to be the best choice for those who don’t like the dinging of raindrops much.
The fiber ceiling can provide a maximum of 0.75 NRC value (in standard American atmosphere) while the gypsum board doesn’t absorb noise at all.
